Have you ever tried deep breathing when you're anxious and thought, This isn't helping?
Or tried to motivate yourself when you felt completely shut down, only to feel even more exhausted?
One reason may be simple:
Not every nervous system state needs the same thing.
Learning to recognize what is happening in your body can help you choose tools that better match what you actually need.
This is the state in which we generally feel safe enough to connect, think clearly, engage with others, and respond rather than simply react.
You may notice:
Being regulated doesn't mean you're always happy or stress-free. You can experience difficult emotions and still remain connected and present.
When your brain and body perceive threat, your system may mobilize to protect you.
You might experience:
When your system is highly activated, tools that help slow, orient, and ground the body may be helpful.
Try:
Sometimes the nervous system responds to overwhelm not by mobilizing, but by reducing energy and disengaging.
This can feel like:
When you're already shut down, becoming more still isn't always what your body needs.
Instead, gentle activation may be more helpful:
The goal isn't to force yourself out of a state. It's to give your nervous system information and experiences that support greater regulation and connection.
This is why knowing a long list of coping tools isn't enough.
Before asking, "What technique should I use?" begin with, "What state am I in?"
Then get curious:
What happened right before I shifted?
What sensations told me my nervous system was changing?
What situations, people, thoughts, memories, or environments repeatedly trigger this response?
What helps me begin to feel present and connected again?
The more familiar you become with your own patterns, the earlier you can recognize a shift, and the more intentionally you can respond.
This is the movement from simply reacting to your nervous system to developing a relationship with it.
Awaken to what is happening.
Connect with yourself and God in the midst of it.
Integrate what you're learning about your patterns and triggers.
Embody new ways of responding.
Knowing your nervous system state is only the beginning.
